![]() Although the role of fathers has changed over the last decades, child- and family-related areas are still the mothers’ domain, which puts the mothers in an advantageous position. This difference in power is partly shaped by social norms about motherhood and fatherhood and legal roles as resident and non-resident parents. Overall, the dissertation shows that mothers have more agency than fathers in a child-related policy area like child visitation disputes. In order to paint a comprehensive picture of the parents as clients in these cases, the dissertation investigates their behavior before, during and after the encounter. Recent public administration research focuses mainly on bias in public authorities’ decision-making, but we know little about how clients interact with bureaucracy and how they try to influence the process and the decision-making. The dissertation draws on theories from public administration about street-level bureaucracy, sociological theories about welfare encounters and client behavior as well as sociological and psychological theories about gender differences. Still, public sector organizations are capable of affecting employee public service motivation to form a match with the work environment of different public services.īesides offering important theoretical and empirical contributions to research in dynamics of public service motivation, the dissertation is relevant to all who are interested in how we can take advantage of the more prosocial sides of employee motivation in current public service provision.This dissertation takes its point of departure in an empirical question about how mothers and fathers behave in child visitation rights disputes in light of public discussions about gender discrimination against fathers. ![]() ![]() This has important consequences for their satisfaction. Using a range of interviews and surveys with Danish employees as well as cross-national data, the dissertation’s analyses show that what employees do in terms of being able to help others and contribute to society through their public service jobs matters more for their employment decisions than the sector in which they do it. This dissertation focuses on a particular type of work motivation among public service providers, public service motivation, and its emergence and development in different public service work settings. Are publicly employed service providers more motivated to do good for others and society than privately employed? If so, are such motivational differences a result of attraction-selection or socialization in different public service jobs? And how does this affect employee job satisfaction and inclination to switch job/sector? Understanding the motivation of public service providers is crucial for how public service provision is structured and managed.
